Amazing Control and Isolations. This is way hard, folks.

A dance of beautiful, articulate control!  Must see!

“This dance is a prayer for women who hold themselves back, who do not know their own power, as creators, as healers, as givers of life…”   – Zola Dubnikova

My Current Minor Obsession

My current minor obsession is a gorgeous, heavily tattooed, incredibly talented Ukrainian ballet dancer, Sergei Polunin.  You may know him from the Hozier video, “Take Me To Church.”  For fun I meddle about on the computer and lately I’ve created a few videos starring my “Sergei.”  One of them has over 55,000 hits.  I am not alone in my obsession…

Here is my latest endeavor.

The Exquisite Torture of Sergei Polunin

This video is about ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, and the Exquisite Torture he embraces and endures.  In no other art form is the artist so much the medium in which he works as in dance.  A dancer so divine no longer belongs to himself but to the art.  He is a prisoner of and to the art form which he himself helped create.  In this prison, the dancer languishes, yet revels.  It can not be denied or forsaken.  So, gloriously the dancer throws himself into the Exquisite Torture.

Sergei Polunin (born 20 November 1989) is a Ukrainian ballet dancer who was formerly a principal dancer with the British Royal Ballet and is currently a principal dancer with Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre and the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre.  He skyrocketed to fame with his performance in Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” video.  Deemed the “bad boy of ballet,” he left the British Royal Ballet when he renounced his art and vowed never to dance again.   However, unable to stay away, he, to the delight of the dance world, returned.  Polunin is a rare talent, comparable to Baryshnikov and Nureyev.  In a striking symbolic gesture, the portrait he holds at the end of this video is that of Rudolf Nureyev.  He recently broke the hearts of women and girls everywhere by becoming a real life couple with his often onstage partner, ballerina Natalia Osipova.

My darling students and the vintage pics from my dance studio, Ingram School of Dance (founded in 1933) make for some really great memes!

Penelope Jane & Sergei “Ponoonin” Polunin

My 4 year old niece Penelope Jane vows one day to marry Sergei Polunin, the “man who dances in the church.” Until then, she’s happy just to dance like he does and watch the “Ponoonin” video every day. Every. Single. Day.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year, you’ve seen the incredible, gorgeous, heavily tattooed ballet dancer, Sergei Polunin, perform in a church-like, barn-like setting to “Take Me To Church” by Hozier.  Well, the proclaimed “bad boy of ballet” is her “Ponoonin.”

So, here I present to you, an original Penelope Jane performance, inspired by Sergei Polunin.

In my spare time (when I’m supposed to be doing something else that I don’t really want to do), I like to create memes, usually motivational in nature.  I use photos from my own library 99% of the time.  Since my studio has been around since 1933, I’ve got some really cool old vintage pics, and several thousand performance stills from over 30 years of recitals since I’ve owned it.

Here is a collection of dance-related memes of my own making.  Hope you like.  Leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you.  =)

My bittiest niece performs to “The Lady Song,” a baby ballet class staple. We dance to it at the end of every lesson.  Click here to watch.

I’m Buying More Than Dance Lessons, I’m Paying For Something Else

So, if I am not paying for dance, what am I paying for? Opportunities.
